WHAT CAN MY CHILD EXPECT FROM A Math boosters (NUMBER NINJAS) CLASS?
Each Number Ninjas class has seven (7) ways wherein the coach assesses each child’s growth in understanding the topic, applying their skills, and practicing the necessary character traits and attitudes.
1. EXPLORATION
The class plays a game designed to see what the baseline ability level of the learner is on the topic, and then get them to self-rate how easy or hard they find it so that the coaches have an idea of which learners need extra help or attention.
The class is designed based on the Gradual Release of Responsibility (GRR) Framework. Its goal is to transfer learning from the responsibility of the coach to that of the learners. There are four steps.
2. MODELLED INSTRUCTION (STEP 1)
The learners acquire information by listening to the coach as they step through the process through an example.
3. SHARED INSTRUCTION (STEP 2)
The learners take a more active role by instructing the coach to answer a new example of the same topic. This way, the coach can tell if they understood the topic.
4. COLLABORATION (STEP 3)
The learners work together to answer a new example of the same topic. This way, the learners develop their mastery of the topic as well as their social skills.
5. INDEPENDENT APPLICATION (STEP 4)
The learners practice drive and grit by answering as many examples on their own, with the coach providing scaffolding as needed. This step is done through the workbooks on Google Slides. The activities are tiered to ensure that they learn with progression. This also makes sure that beginner, intermediate, and advanced learners can be accommodated.
6. REFLECTION
The learners practice their growth mindset by reflecting on the challenges they encountered or mistakes they made, and what they learned from them.
7. CONSULTATION
The coach stays on the call for 2-5 minutes after each session, so they are available to answer any questions learners have or help learners who are struggling with the topic.
